Over the last couple of months I have had the privilege to test and push the new LumoPro LP180 to its limits. I have owned several LP160’s for about a year and have been very happy with them and was excited to see what they could possibly improve on with the new model. When the new LP180 arrived my first thought was the build quality. It seams like it is something Canon or Nikon would make. Maybe even better.

I threw some batteries in it and fired it up. The options and control you have over it is a huge improvement over the very simple LP160.

Now for the first test. I used Pocket Wizards PlusIII to trigger my flashes. The first thing I noticed is the LP180 has both a PC sync slot and Mini Phone so I can use either cable to trigger. It also has a built-in optical slave which allows me to fire some of the optically, saving money on buying more radio triggers.

The flash recycles fast and there is a beep to let you know when it is ready to go again (can be shut off).

All in all the new LP180 is a huge improvement and likely the best value manual flash on the market. If you are into lighting it is worth taking the time to check one out!

Why didn’t you take an awesome photo of ME on a bike and helmet?
